News from Portugal

Portuguese attacked by British racists - 40 British youths beat 6 Portuguese into hospital, shouting: “Go back to where you came from!”

Six Portuguese emigrants were attacked and beaten by a large group of 40 English youths last Friday night in the streets of Wisbech, approximately 30 kilometers from Cambridge. Initial reports suggest the attack was racially motivated. Police were quoted as saying this week it could be one of Britain’s worst such attacks. While a number of surveillance cameras can be found along the street where the attack took place, no arrests had been made a week after the incident. Local newspapers and radio stations claimed the group of British youths could be charged for the crimes of attempted murder and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, as four of the six Portuguese were beaten up to such an extent they are still at the North Cambs Hospital, nearly a week later. Video footage revealed that one of the victims was kicked in the head around 30 times. Cambridge Police was further quoted as saying by Portuguese daily” Público”, that the attack is one of the worst to have occurred in England. However, one of the Portuguese victims has said their attackers have since passed them on the streets, laughing and mocking them.

Did you know that Portugal has 3 earthquakes per DAY?

coast of southern Portugal early Tuesday morning. The earthquake, recorded at 06h31, was felt in the Algarve, the Alentejo and as far afield as Lisbon. According to geological experts, effects of the earthquake would have been devastating had it occurred closer to the coastline. The earthquakes epicenter was located 150 kilometers southwest of Sagres. But experts add that there are no indications that more earthquakes will be recorded, saying an after-shock was felt nine minutes later that measured three on the Richter Scale. On average, Portugal records an incredible average of three earthquakes a day, though they are rarely felt. On Sunday, in northern Portugal, an earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter Scale was measured in Miranda do Douro.

Portugal has for the past fortnight been ravaged by what many observers believe to be the country’s worst fires ever

On Monday, exactly a week after the first fires erupted in central Portugal, the Prime Minister called a national emergency, but refrained from declaring a state of emergency, despite several calls for him to do so. By Thursday, the fires, that have destroyed more than 54,000 hectares of pine and eucalyptus forest, orchards and vineyards, along with many houses in remote towns and villages, had claimed 14 victims. The government gathered this week in an emergency session to declare a "state of public calamity", as scores of wildfires, which have claimed 14 lives during the past week, continued ravaging the country from north to south. On Sunday, Durão Barroso, Prime Minister,  described the situation as the country's "worst tragedy in living memory". One fireman was quoted by SIC television as saying that fighting the fire in Oleiros was more frightening than being in the World Trade Center. The fireman, who spent several years as a fireman in New York and was on duty on September 11, said the difference between the two events was, that at the WTC, he knew he still had a way out, while during a fire on Tuesday, he was completely surrounded by flames and thought his death was inevitable.

Air safety Portugal faces 3rd world rating

Portugal has been given 60 days to bring its abysmal air safety systems at its airports in line with stringent conditions, or it will relegated to a second category destination, a title usually reserved for undeveloped or developing countries. According to what is generally considered the most powerful international aviation authority, Portugal is not complying with the minimum requirements in terms of international air safety. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has handed Portugal a 60-day deadline to rectify its problems or it will lose its current premium aviation rating.

Poetry = Poesia

a Vila Franca e Água do Pau

Pelo Compadre Daniel Amaral

As Nove Ilhas dos Açores

Tem lá grandes valores

Onde tudo é um encanto!

É  tão linda a nossa Terra

Porque lá é que se encerra

O Divino Espírito Santo.

Já corri minha Ilha inteira

Vi Pico, Faial e Terceira,

Graciosa, Corvo e Flores!...

Fui a São Jorge no mesmo dia

Igualmente a Santa Maria.

Vi as nove Ilhas dos Açores.

Depois noutra ocasião

Saí do Concelho da Povoação

Na minha burrinha branca!..

Na viagem fiz um engano

Eu levei quase um ano

A chegar a Vila Franca.

Depois fui a Água de Pau

Comi lá um prato de bacalhau

Com a burra ao pé de mim!...

Lá provei o seu bom vinho

Ate a burra bebeu um copinho

Nunca vi uma burra assim.

Quando  voltei a Vila Franca

Já burra andava manca

Fui assistir a uma boda!..

Lá comprei louça e foices

A burra começou aos coices

Quebrou-me a louça toda.

Mas a burra espantada

Deixou atrás a albarda

Juntamente com o seirão!...

Ela picou-se nas foices

E voltou sempre aos coices

Até chegar à Povoação.
