How  our profits have been spent? – We are now on our 35th Supper. We started slow, small, but now we have attained a mature form.

 (1) We spent $5,125:86  with our International Baptism. This was our biggest expense. The President of the Mother Academy said that our Baptism was the best he had attended since 1968. We had to pay for the musicians, dancers and singers, plus we gave a first class lunch  to all the visitors from  Portugal, Africa, South America, Newark and Toronto.   We are proud we did, but it cost us a big sum.

        (2) We bought 250 books “Eye Witness to Portugal” for $3,000, which we offered to the public Libraries in this region;  This was a great success. More libraries wanted more books like these, but we could not get them.

(3) We bought 600 books written by Manuel Mira “The Portuguese in the formation of America” at a  special cost of  $2,800 to be given also to the public, high school and Universities  Libraries of the New England;

(4) We gave $750 dollars to the fire victims in Portugal;

(5) It was by the specific request of our Academy that the Banco Espírito Santo of Lisbon, with six delegations in USA, gave us a check of $2,800  to pay for the cost of a glass case,  made of  Brazilian mahogany wood, to preserve the model of the Caravel “Victória” which was a gift from the King of Spain, Don Juan Carlos, to the Dighton Rock Museum;

(7) We just gave $700 to the church committee of Fajã de Cima, in São Miguel, Azores, to help the establishment of a program to  keep the needed children in a special program after school hours.   In this program the Rotary Clubs of Ponta Delgada, Bristol and Warren are also participating.

(8) We are at the present time negotiating with the University of the Azores to obtain   63 books  in English for $1070:00,  about the life in the  Azores to offer also to the Public Libraries,  so the Americans and our children and grandchildren can learn about  the lands of our ancestors.

(9) We paid $69:99 to register the name of our  Academy of Codfish of New England in the Internet. We are paying  to maintain our website $22:95 which per year totals $275:40. We are paying $20:00 every year to renew our Incorporation.

(10) We are spending per month $85:50 in stamps, which amounts per year a total of $1,100:00. Plus envelops, paper for the Buletin and ink for the copier. So we are spending around $1,500:00 per year with the Buletin, but when one of our Compadres or  Compadres does not get the Buletin, they complain. We still  feel this is the best way to keep our members informed and united.

(11) Our drum for our raffle $110:00

Another point we should clear is that every member of the Directors pays in full for their meals. No exceptions!  This way everyone is EQUAL.  Everyone knows that all our profits are to be spent  in  cultural, benevolent activities,  or acquiring books in English about the Culture and History  of the Portuguese peoples  wherever country they  may live and  offer them  to the regional libraries.

This is the reason why all Directors appreciate very much the gifts  for our raffle, and the helpers to sell the ticks so the raffle runs so smoothly.

We are grateful to our President and Secretary for the many hours they have given during the year to prepare and send out the Buletin. It is not an easy task!…

The restaurants that have been serving us We are grateful to all the restaurants that have been serving our Suppers. We want the general public to know that these restaurants have been very kind to us, because they also understand the meaning of our humanitarian objectives.  We have a special  salute for Beira Alta, Lusitano, Primavera and Europa.

Our Protocol—During our last supper our protocol went very well. The restaurant served us on time, fast and good food. Everyone enjoyed the meal. Our raffle also went very orderly and the Faithful Friend was also done in time. The poetry was not lengthy and when it came to the jokes, they were to the point and with plenty of spice. People wanted more, but any show is positive when the audience wants more. So come to the next supper.  We want to thank  our members because they were quiet when there was need for silence!  Also we want to thank everyone who called for reservations before coming to the restaurant. We are really getting much better.

 The youngest Compadre at our last supper –Victor Medeiros, the
 youngest Compadre at the last supper had a magnanimous gesture. Our profit
 reached $694 dollars.  So Victor Medeiros got up and came to the Directors’
 table and gave our treasure Afonso da Silva SIX dollars of his one money to
 complete the round figure of $700 dollars. WOW!  This original gesture
 reminds us that we have to start attracting young men and young women to
 become our Compadres and Comadres.  Once they get the taste of our
 protocol they will realize also that the codfish is the best food in the world for
 our health!

The International Congress of the Academies in Luanda, Angola – We saw some photos of the International Congress of the Academies in Luanda, Angola, which were sent to us by the President of the Codfish Academy of Horta, FaiaL, Azores. Judging by the photos about 60 people attended that same Congress.  Our Compadre Ivo Azevedo, from the Toronto Academy,  informed us that the  International Congress of the Academies of Codfish next year will be held on  the first part of October,  in Estoril, Portugal.

The Congress of the Academies of North America: In USA and Canada – We are going to study the possibility of organizing a Congress of the Academies of North America to be held in the epicenter of the distance between Toronto, Newark and Bristol, Rhode Island.  It is not going to  be easy to find a place where they could cook codfish for us, but we are going to study such possibilities.

The new Medical Book by Dr. Paulo Pacheco – Dr. Paulo Pacheco, a gastroenterologist, in New York City, son of our Compadres Frederico and Deodete Pacheco, from Bristol, just published a new book entitled “Living with Chronic Heartburn”.  There are at least twenty five million Americans who  suffer from this ailment. He has been getting excellent reviews and was even written on the “Time” magazine two weeks ago. We are pleased to register this event because it not often that we have one of our own who makes it  good,  nationally,  in U. S. A.

Two more Academies of Codfish in America.  We have been informed that one Academy of Codfish in Connecticut and another in Florida are in the process of been formed. We welcome them, and wish them good luck and success!

Our RaffleThe givers:  Daniel Amaral , Casal Garcia wine; Celso Araujo, Port wine; Celeste Medina, cesto de sabonetes; Silvia da Silva, Red wine of Vinha do Monte; Luciano da Silva, Red wine, Dão;  Frederico Pacheco Vice-Rei  table wine; and Lizete Silva Wine Sauvignon.ç Joao Sousa, da Cardoso Travel Agency, Tour to New York City for shopping Dec. 13, 2003; Maria Resendes, Liquor Maracujá; The sellers of tickets:  Virgínia Miranda, Gina Oliveira, Gina Miranda, Lizete Silva, Manuel Rodrigues, Afonso da Silva, Deodete Pacheco, Silvia da Silva

Our first poet – Alvaro Pinto was our first Poet. He came to our first Supper in New Bedford, three years ago, and brought us the first poem. One sonnet. Here it is. We asked him to read it again at our last supper.

Fiel Amigo

Fiel Amigo

Tu és Fiel. Eu vou ser-te Fiel,

Fiel Amigo, que estás à nossa mesa,

A lembrar a História Portuguesa

Gloriosa. Não é História de Cordel...

Em lauta mesa ou em saca de farnel,

Vives connosco o dia a dia desta vida,
