4 Portuguese that received the Nobel
Prize
To
receive the Nobel Prize is the highest honor
in the world, besides getting over
one million dollars
The Nobel Prize was established by Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist who invented the dynamite, in 1867. He built factories all over the world and when he died in 1896 at the age of 63, he was multimillionaire.
He
left a fortune of 9 millions dollars in the Swedish National Bank with a will so
that the compound interest was to be given to persons who had contribute
in a positive way to the betterment of mankind.
The
Nobel Prizes were given for the fist time in 1901. The Nobel Prizes were given
in Medicine, Peace, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Economics. Economics was
later established by
the Swedish Bank.
The
country that has received more Nobel Prizes are citizens of
Here
are the four Portuguese citizens that have received the Nobel Prize:
In
1949, Professor António Egas Moniz, born in Avanca, Continental
He
was given the Nobel Prize in Medicine because he discovered the surgical
techniques of Lobotomy, Lobectomy and Angiography.
Lobectomy
is cutting the lobes, or parts of brain in crazy people.
Lobectomy is the technique of taken out pieces of lobes of the brain in
crazy people.
Angiography
is a technique of visualizing the blood vessel with
opaque substances.
This
test is being used today in millions of persons all over the world, to
determined if we have clogged arteries or if we have tumors.
Egas
Moniz’s house in Avanca is now a beautiful Museum. Visit it when you go to
In
1996 – Two Portuguese received the Nobel Prize for Peace: Bishop Carlos
Ximenes Belo and José Ramos Horta, because of their effort for the independence
of
In
1998 –José Saramago, Writer, received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
I
tried to read the books by Saramago, in Portuguese and English, but I cannot
read them, they do not appeal to me. But those of you that want to try, go to
your local library, and I am sure you will find there copies of his books. Have
fun with them.
Now
the Noble Prize is worth more than one million dollars and it is tax free.

4
Portugueses receberam o Prémio Nobel.
Receber
o Prémio Nobel é considerado a
Angiografia
A
