The end of our Faithful Friend- The Codfish!

It is with sadness that we read nowadays the news that our friend, the codfish, is becoming a very rare specimen in the waters of the North Atlantic .  Cod thrives in the waters that have a temperature between 38 and 48 degrees Fahrenheit.  Codfish exists  on earth for more than 150 millions!  For centuries it has been the symbol of food energy.  Five centuries ago its abundance was immense in the waters  of New England .  So much so that it even gave the name to this region the Cape Cod .  Many fortunes were made in Boston with the profits of Codfish. Codfish is even the symbol of the State of Massachusetts . Under the dome of the Capitol in Boston   hangs an eight feet long codfish (made of wood)  as symbol of that glorious past.

The Portuguese sailors and fishermen were the first to cross the Atlantic and come  to the Land of Bacalhaus to catch the codfish.   We know today that codfish is the best form of food, in terms of protein, vitamins, iodine, etc. besides lowering the bad cholesterol.

Canada , United States and now the European Union are establishing limits quotas  in the fishing of codfish to see if there is a restoration   of the codfish beds. Let us hope this will work, to prevent the disappearance of codfish all together.

One final note: the English Pilgrims used codfish for their Thanksgiving dinner and not turkey as it is taught across America . Archaeological studies  done in Plymouth Plantation revealed that  ONLY  codfish bones were found and NO  turkey bones  were detected there!

 “Os Fieis  Amigos da Academia”

We want to Express our sincere  thanks to the  players and singers who performed  at our last Codfish supper.   With their popular numbers they gave us a touch of nostalgia concerning the popular songs we all knew very well before we immigrated to America . We are going to do a television show on “Tribuna Médica” to show to many thousand of viewers  the performance of  José Luís Melo: Guitarra e Saxofone; Liberto Vieira: Cantador; António Martins Medeiros: Violão; Jorge Cardoso: Acordeão.

Poetry and Jokes Because of the extension  of the musical show  we did not have time for the  presentations  of  Poetry and Jokes. The next two suppers because of Thanksgiving and Christmas we are going to follow our usual  protocol and give a chance to our poets and  our humorists… So bring your talents!

Our Faithful Friend of our 47th Codfish Supper

4 Portuguese that received the Nobel Prize

To receive the Nobel Prize is the highest  honor  in the world, besides getting  over one million dollars

The Nobel Prize was established by Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist who invented the dynamite, in 1867.  He built factories  all over the world and when he died in 1896 at the age of 63,  he was multimillionaire.

He left a fortune of 9 millions dollars in the Swedish National Bank with a will so that the compound interest was to be given to persons who had contribute  in a positive way to the betterment of mankind.

The Nobel Prizes were given for the fist time in 1901. The Nobel Prizes were given in Medicine, Peace, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Economics. Economics was  later   established by the Swedish Bank.

The country that has received more Nobel Prizes are citizens of U. S. A.

Here are the four Portuguese citizens that have received the Nobel Prize:

In 1949, Professor António Egas Moniz, born in Avanca, Continental Portugal ,  graduated from the University of Coimbra , became a Professor of Neurology.

He was given the Nobel Prize in Medicine because he discovered the surgical techniques of Lobotomy, Lobectomy and Angiography.

Lobectomy is cutting the lobes, or parts of brain in crazy people.   Lobectomy is the technique of taken out pieces of lobes of the brain in crazy people.

Angiography is a technique of visualizing the blood vessel with  opaque substances.

This test is being used today in millions of persons all over the world, to determined if we have clogged arteries or if we have tumors.

Egas Moniz’s house in Avanca is now a beautiful Museum. Visit it when you go to Portugal

In 1996 – Two Portuguese received the Nobel Prize for Peace: Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo and José Ramos Horta, because of their effort for the independence of East Timor .

In 1998 –José Saramago, Writer, received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

I tried to read the books by Saramago, in Portuguese and English, but I cannot read them, they do not appeal to me. But those of you that want to try, go to your local library, and I am sure you will find there copies of his books. Have fun with them.

Now the Noble Prize is worth more than one million dollars and it is tax free.
