Academy -- Why such a name?

Academy!

Why such a name?

The name Academy is derived from the Greek.

It was the famous philosopher Plato  who had his School  of Phylosophy in Athens,  Greece, more than 2400 years ago, and he gave his lessons on  an  open garden called  'Academus' .

His school had no benches, no windows. The students walked around,  listen and asked questions to the Master. The students were called peripatetics, whichh means  'awalking  in a circle', around the garden 'Academus'.

It is from this name 'Academus' that all the names of Academies of Music, of Sciences, etc. and now the Academy of Codfish, are inspired.

The name of Academy of Codfish was born in one of the dinner meetings,  in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1968.

It was someone who had atended the University of the City of Oporto, Portugal,  and had belonged to the Academic Musial Group who sugested the name Academy. Everyone had  laughed but  the name stuck.

Even today the people laugh when we mention the name of our Academy of Codfish of New England.

But when we explain  the main objectives of our organization and also inform them of the excellent healthy qualities of  the codfish, -- as the best food in the world, --  they verify that  it is not any laughing matter. Our Academy of Codfish is a serious organizarion dedicated to the good  health, and to the  cultural social and historical well being of our citizens.

Our Mother Academy is in Johannesburg, South Africa.
