Land of the Codfish or Terra dos Bacalhaus is the name given to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia given by Joao Vaz Corte Real when he made his first voyage to North America in 1472, and saw a tremendous abundance of codfish in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
The name of Terra dos Bacalhaus appears in several early Portuguese maps.
